Are Dakota R/Ts suddenly hot?

I do not claim to be a smart guy, but over the years, I've learned a few lessons about which vehicles to buy and which ones to ignore (no matter how much they tickle my automotive funny bone.) When I bought the 1998 Dodge Dakota R/T out of a shady used car dealer in Florida, I had a feeling these trucks were poised for a jump - but it was a gamble.

So far over the last six months, the Dakota R/T seems to be selling at a fairly high price point on Bring A Trailer. Sure, you expect to see the low-mileage trucks attract decent money, but these trucks are selling for $20K or better pretty consistently.

When I went looking for one of these hot rod trucks, my logic was this: they're not going to make trucks like this ever again; the 5.9L V8 is a legendary engine; this was one of the best eras of Dakota styling; and an R/T - in this application - actually meant something, with a limited-slip, lowered suspension, bigger sway bars, and a performance exhaust. It was the real deal as far as a factory performance truck goes, and it's still far cheaper than an F150 Lightning or a GMC Syclone.

If you get a chance, try finding a decent one in your local classifieds - it's not easy. Which may explain why these are on the upswing.
