One of the bigger challenges with owning a genuine Audi Coupe Quattro is the lack of model-specific spare parts. Despite looking all the world like an Audi 90 or 80 two-door, the Coupe Quattros (CQs) actually utilized numerous model-specific parts. One of the first items to become impossible to find was the front bumper, which may look like the same bumper as on a later Cabriolet model, but rest assured, they're different.

Front bumpers take a lot of abuse. And many of the CQ guys want their cars to look like the overseas-market RS2, so they track down the factory body kit and ditch the OEM bumpers. Throw in a low production volume of under 2,000 units and you have a recipe for body panels that are very hard to come by.

I knew going into this the front bumper on the CQ was damaged, with a huge gouge taken out of it - definitely not repairable. I lucked out again by using Car-Part.com and finding the one lone CQ in a wrecking yard in Missouri, not far from a friend of mine who raids junkyard cars for sport. This is also where I scored those sweet Borbet Type Cs. Needless to say, this was a needle in a haystack-type find, and even if the bumper shell that surrounds the bumper isn't much better than my current one, the lower front air dam offered up a pair of undamaged NOS fog lights.

We're aways from tackling the paint work but at least one major hurdles has been cleared.
